Background

In mid-2019, several community and organizational leaders asked Erie Together to help stakeholders create a comprehensive domestic violence reduction strategy for Erie County. The tasks before the group include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develop a common definition of “domestic violence” to be used across all systems (service providers, law enforcement, courts, schools, etc.).

  • Review data on the scope and causes of domestic violence in Erie County; identify and address data gaps, where possible.

  • Identify current efforts to reduce domestic violence in Erie County; review data on impact.

  • Identify specific challenges associated with reducing domestic violence in Erie County, and ways to address those challenges.

  • Identify, research and learn from domestic violence reduction strategies working elsewhere across the country; consider their application in Erie County.

  • Develop and document a comprehensive strategy to reduce domestic violence in Erie County.

Participating stakeholders include law enforcement, domestic violence agencies, higher education institutions, social service agencies, legal service providers, immigrant services, public health and healthcare providers, and others. Erie Together convened the group for the first time in August 2019, and this work continues.
