Financial and Consumer Education Training Workshops

The Center for Financial and Consumer Outreach, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Securities Commission, the Erie General Electric Federal Credit Union and the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, will be providing a FREE comprehensive educator training workshop. The workshop will be conducted on May 16th and May 17th at Penn State Behrend’s Reed Student Union Building for educators and representatives from nonprofit organizations.  Beginning at 10 am and concluding at 1pm with lunch to follow, three 50 minute presentations will be conducted.  During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to enhance their own financial literacy knowledge as well as be provided with techniques and tools to effectively deliver financial literacy and consumer related information in their classrooms, after-school programs or through their nonprofit organization.

Topics to be discussed include:

· Current financial demands are poking and prodding many of us, in addition to our long term goals and dreams. Learn about several financial basics, including: the differences between saving and investing, the powerful effect of time on your investments and financial nest egg, the role of risk in investing, easy ways to set aside money for retirement, and precautions to avoid financial fraud. Additionally, learn about and take home resources from the Pennsylvania Securities Commission to use in the classroom with your students.

· Credit 101 — what I need to know and why!

· The importance of identity protection, as well as steps you can take to prevent identity theft and fraud. Participants will also receive information on internet safety, and how you can ensure that your browsing is safe.
